The guardian of this blog.
Welcome to Oxford for all you freshers! And welcome back for anyone who went away.
It's that time of the year again - the nights are drawing in, there is a nip in the air, and rosy-cheeked farmers are harvesting their crops. And be-gowned students are lugging their tea-chests full of books back up to university!
But seriously, it will be great to meet you if you're new to Oxford - even if you're not new, it will (probably) be great to see you again in the coming days.
Freshers Week Activities
You will see on the termcard a whole host of fun activities for Freshers' Week! All are welcome, even old lags. Let's show them how things are done here! (No, not the thing with the goat, the chicken, and the cardinal's hat - they don't need to know about that ... yet ...)
Happy holidays everyone! I have decided to post up my crappy Black Tie Dinner speech just in case you didn't hear it properly the first time round...
Here goes!
Black Tie Dinner Speech
Having to give a speech ... is rather like being asked to sleep with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
- It's a great honour, but no-one wants to do it.
Now I've been told that a good speech has a strong beginning - and a strong ending.
And a great speech has these two very close together, so I'll try my best.
The other thing I've been told is to remember to thank everyone.
Well, I know - being one of you - that you're a bunch of geeks, who think they're great, and spend all day looking at books and gossiping, and really don't need thanking.
However, there are some people here tonight who I would like to thank, and who actually work very hard for a living.
I refer, of course, to the Hall staff who have prepared such a wonderful meal for us tonight. Greg has already singled out Ben for special praise, but I think they all deserve a round of applause!
Now I know that many of you are full of fear. Fearful for what happens next, when you leave this place. Well, I can offer you no comfort.
Your time here will of course have been special, memorable, even fun; we all realise the great pleasure it is to have the time to spend with people you appreciate.
Most of you will go on to become bankers, politicians, pedants, old farts - much like me! - but, I'm sure that even the most miserable of you will remember how great it was to dine in the Hall of Christ Church.
Now you're not here tonight to listen to guy in a dinner suit insult you. We're here tonight for a jolly; to give our departing friends a good send-off.
So I won't keep you any longer! I simply trust, that as you make your way down the dark and distant hallways of your lives, that you will remember this place as a high spot.
I would like to end on a familiar toast to our remarkable home.
"To the House"
(I also included a toast to the Visitor of the House, aka "Queen, The", as it was her official birthday).
Hello everyone!
I just wanted to say hello, and to say that I hope this year will be a good 'un. Thank you for choosing me as your president - I'll do my best to repay you for this privelege.
Please feel free to contact me about anything, any time - I'll try my best to help!
Cheers,
Tim.
Friends,
It has been one of the greatest honours to serve you all and I thank you for your friendship and support. We have gone from strength to strength this year and achieved so much for our common room.
The future looks promising...
Yours sincerely,
Ozzie Johnston
G. C. R. President
