College Library

  • Term Time:
    Monday-Friday (8am-1am); Saturday and Sunday (9am-1am)

    Vacation:
    Monday-Friday (9am-5pm)

  • • No food is allowed in the Library
    • Bottled water is allowed, but no juice, fizzy drinks or alcohol
    • Hot drinks must be brought in KeepCups (i.e. a sturdy, reusable cup with a lid). Hot drinks are not permitted in other containers (e.g. flimsy takeaway cups)
    • Please keep mobile phones on silent. If you need to call someone, make sure you leave the Library first (don’t stand on the steps outside as the noise carries in)
    • No smoking in the Library
    • Non-Christ Church students may not study in the Library
    • Do not borrow books on behalf of non-Christ Church students. If they need to view something, they can make an appointment with Library staff

  • Postgraduates may borrow a maximum of 40 books at once. Books can be borrowed for a whole term, with 4 renewals (so 4 terms in total, unless someone else requests the book, in which case it must be returned).

Books can be borrowed using the self-issue machine in the entrance hall. If you have problems with this, or have forgotten your university card, alert a member of Library staff.

Volumes marked with a red sticker are Reference Only and cannot be borrowed.

You are responsible for all books checked out on your account. These must not be passed on to other students (either internal or external). If books are lost or damaged, we will charge for the cost of replacement, plus a £10 admin fee for staff time.

  • A reminder email will be sent 3 days before a book becomes overdue. To return the book, scan it through the self-issue machine in the Library entrance and put it on the shelf beneath.

A fine of 25p per day is charged for each overdue book, which is paid via battels at the end of term.

  • If the Library doesn’t have a book that you need, you can request it by emailing the Library, or by filling in the suggestion form here.

We will review the request and decide whether or not to purchase it.

If you have a reading list where multiple books aren’t available, please do share it with us so that we can improve our collections.

  • The Upper Library houses our collection of rare books and manuscripts. Students are very welcome to use these for research, but appointments must be booked in advance.

If you would like to take guests into the Upper Library, this must also be booked in advance.

Please email library@chch.ox.ac.uk to arrange any appointments regarding the Upper Library.
